Exodus 30:23-24, describes the ingredients used in the holy anointing oil. It included myrrh, cinnamon, sweet-smelling cane, cassia, and olive oil. This is the first reference to it. In Hebrew this word is “kaneh bosem” for “sweet smelling cane.” T
his term bears a striking resemblance to the modern word “cannabis.” This similarity seems more than coincidence considering the ancient near eastern historical use of cannabis. It doesn’t seem we ever really lost an understanding of what cannabis is. It has been used for many different things for thousands of years.

In the Song of Songs 4:14, where “kaneh bosem” again emerges, this time translated as calamus, once more suggesting the valued presence of this aromatic cane. It was used to describe a pleasant aroma that was part of a mixture during the poetic seduction between bride and groom. So it shows up as an element in what is considered one of the most romantic passages of scripture.

Cannabis was used for both holy and everyday uses and there is no restriction. Previously only the priests were allowed to make the combination in Exodus, however now we have freedom to do so. Even at that time kaneh bosum was used outside of it’s role in the tabernacle just like olive oil and the others.

I don’t know of any other plant that not only eating it but smoking it provides numerous health benefits. While tobacco is known to cause cancer from smoking it, cannabis cures or treats cancer when smoked. Anyone who is a cannabis smoker that has issues was usually rolling it in tobacco…That’s why I prefer a pipe. It’s funny how the thing that causes cancer is mostly legal and the thing that cures it is mostly illegal. Isn’t that always the way of the world…

I also acknowledge that our Rastafarian brothers and sisters emphasize cannabis as a sacred plant and the healing of the nations…I agree with them somewhat on that. However, everything in moderation. Though this is a favored herb, the biblical incense recipe included several herbs, and while kaneh bosm was clearly important, it was not presented as the sole or supreme element of worship. I already use a lot of olive oil as well as cinnamon. It makes me want to find more uses for myrrh, and acacia.

Cannabis is just one ingredient in the Holy Anointing oil among many that have been revered through time. While it may be favored by many, it is only one plant that had a sacred use. From hyssop to frankincense, there are many references to plants in scripture. If you like Kaneh Bosem you’re in the best company because God likes it too.
